IS FACE MASK UNDER A HELMET DANGEROUS?
Since MECQ has been lifted to some places last April 12,2021 (Monday), commuters and riders can roam freely again outside with their motorcycles in going to workplace. However, riders are asked to pay a big fine if they are not wearing masks under their helmet.
Under the LTO’s Memorandum Circular 2020-2185, “Guidelines in the enforcement of regulations issued by the Department of Transportation relative to the operation of land transportation in the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) areas,” riders failing to comply with the sanitary mandated by the circular is considered reckless driving and will be fined amounting to:
First offense – Php 2,000.00
Second offense – Php 3,000.00
Subsequent offense – Php 10,000.00
But, according to medical doctors, wearing a face mask under the full-face helmet or modular helmet may cause breathing problems, which will lead to blackouts. Imagine motorcyclist especially our dearest delivery riders from FoodPanda, Grab, Lalamove, Angkas etc. already facing high temperature outside and plus this face mask under their helmet.
A face mask designed to filter air could reduce the oxygen entering the body. A low amount of oxygen in lungs while riding a motorcycle will lead to a loss of consciousness. Surgical masks affect breathing. According to some doctors, the heartbeat of a person increases at high speed and needs more oxygen. That means low oxygen will affect the brain and the heart until a person blackout. Pertua advices our motorcyclist to always bring their facemask and stop for a minute in the middle of driving to inhale oxygen.
LAW OR LIFE?
