6 Things to take into consideration when buying a used car
Buying a used vehicle can be more complicated than buying brand new, while buying brand new is more expensive “fresh out of the box” quality is assured as compared to buying used where wear and tear have to be taken into consideration. Here are some things to consider if you’re thinking of buying a used vehicle:
1. Check the body
Inspect the car right after being washed, so you can properly observe if there is rust (Often exposed to rain), uneven paint color (repainted panel) or scratches.
2. Test drive the vehicle
This is an important part of the inspection process, this will give you an indication of the maintenance this vehicle has gone through and its road worthiness. Listen to the engine, you’ll immediately notice unnatural sounds or squeaking noises from lose belts that may need to be replaced. Test the brakes, try doing sudden but controlled stops if there is vibration the rotors or pads may be damaged and need replacing. Also, don’t forget to feel the vehicle as it goes through bumps and potholes to determine the condition of the under-chassis.
3. Look under the hood
Inspect the engine bay thoroughly, check if fluid caps are original and in good condition especially the coolant cap as a loose cap can cause an overheat. Also don’t forget to check hinges and locks for parts like the hood stand and battery, make sure these are in good condition to avoid vibrations.
4. Check the Interior
Smell the interior. Vehicles that have been flooded give out a certain smell. If there’s no foul smell, check for bumps in the seats because it’s another sign that the interior has been flooded. Further, check the seats for any rips, tears, or stains that may require repairing or cleaning.
5. Check the electrical components
Checking for bugs in the electrical system can be tricky, unless you bring it to the proper service center you really can’t do it on your own. What you can do is, during the test drive try out all essential components such as lights, radio etc. sometimes if there is a bug in the system using any more of those components trigger an electrical short that could be hazardous on the road.
